Does your life sometimes need a good stirring? Do you occasionally need someone to come up to you and call out ‘wake up’!
I know I do. Regularly.
2 Peter 1:12–15 (ESV)
Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me. And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.
In our lives as Christians, we haven’t been called to settle. We aren’t called to just accept life as it is – but to be a part of the change that God is bringing to this world that He created.
What does it mean to be stirred up? It means to be not comfortable! I know when I am being stirred I am not comfortable with my life as it is! I want more to do with God – I want less to do with the sinful world around me. I want to read my Bible more, to pray more, to know more, to be more holy, to do God’s will.
And yet, even after being stirred, just like a pot of water if I am left alone I will settle again. I will become still and stagnant, no longer growing, but accepting life again just as it is.
So despite it not being comfortable for me, it is good to have those in my life to stir me up! It is good to have those around me who take the time to help me see God’s will. People who take the time to help me see what God is doing now, and to encourage me to be a part of it. People who stir me up to grow and become more of the person God wants me to be. And in our connected world these people aren’t always around me directly! Lots of the blogs I read also stir me up to greater things. The encourage me to move on – to learn more, to do more, to find out what God really wants for me to do and to get on with it!
How about you? Do you need an occasional stir in your life? How do you find it – friends, family, pastor, blogs, podcasts?
Let me encourage you – we could all do with a good stir now and then. So despite the discomfort that can come with a good stir, seek for ways to remain stirred in your own life, whatever it takes.
